Lent continues to unfold. We are a few days away from Holy Week, which brings an invitation to each of us. Holy Week invites us not to rush past these sacred days but to walk slowly with Jesus.
In the busyness of our lives, it can be tempting to move quickly through Jesus’s story—Palm Sunday to Easter morning—without lingering in the moments in between. Yet Holy Week asks something different of us. It asks us to pause, to pay attention, and to notice the love of Jesus revealed in each moment. Throughout these days, Jesus shows us the depth of his heart.
- He kneels to wash the feet of his friends, reminding us that love is expressed through humble service.
- He shares a meal and offers himself completely, revealing that love is self-giving.
- He walks into the garden carrying sorrow and trust at the same time, teaching us that we can bring our whole hearts God.
- And even in suffering, he continues to love, forgive, and remain present.
One of the gifts of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius is learning to consider the moments of Jesus’ life—to notice the people he encounters, the actions he takes, and the love he reveals. When we slowly walk with Jesus, we often discover that Jesus is not only revealing his heart to the world, but also speaking personally to our own lives.
Where might Jesus be inviting you to stay close to him this week?
Perhaps you notice him in the quiet opportunities for service presented to you this week. Perhaps you recognize him in your own prayers that sound like his prayers in the garden of Gethsemane. Perhaps you find yourself standing near someone who is suffering. However you enter Jesus’s story, know that you are not just remembering events from long ago. You are also being invited into an encounter with Jesus today.
This week, you might try a simple prayer of consideration. Each day, take a few moments to reflect:
- Who did I encounter today?
- What moments invited me to love more deeply?
- Where did I notice Jesus walking with me?
Holy Week reminds us that the heart of Jesus is always moving toward us in love. As we walk with him through these sacred days, may we discover again that we are deeply known, deeply accompanied, and deeply loved. May we take this deeper knowing and share what we receive with others we encounter this week.
